McGuinty government funding provides new uniforms for cadet pipe and drum band
SAULT STE. MARIE – The provincial government is providing $13,600 for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 155 Squadron to purchase new uniforms David Orazietti, MPP announced today prior to a plaque ceremony marking the group’s achievement this evening at the Sault Armoury.
“Our government is proud to support an organization that develops the attributes of good citizenship, resourcefulness and leadership among the young people of our province,” said Orazietti. “With this grant, the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 155 Squadron will continue to offer the youth of our community a unique developmental opportunity through the promotion of physical fitness and musical training.”
The grant will be used over the next year to purchase kilts, belts, buckles, sporrans and spats for the air cadet pipe and drum marching band.
The usual cost to outfit a band member is approximately $1,400 per person for uniform and another $1,000 for instruments.
The uniforms and instruments are provided to cadets at no cost in order to prevent this being a barrier to participation.
Not only will the new equipment allow more cadets to participate in the band but it will replace old and worn equipment to positively impact the appearance of the band.
“The Trillium grant will ensure the continuation of our traditions with the pipe and drum band and the success of our squadron’s music program,” said Michel G. Duguay, captain and commanding officer of 155RC(Air)CS.
The Royal Canadian Air Cadets 155 Squadron was formed in 1942 to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and to stimulate an interest in the air activities of the Canadian Forces.
They currently have 60 cadets, both male and female, aged 12 to 18, as well as seven part-time employees and 24 volunteers involved with organization.
The Royal Canadian Air Cadets 155 Squadron band is a Scottish pipe and drum band and its uniforms include kilts and full regalia.
Normally 15 to 18 cadets participate in the band.
