************************* This past summer was a summer to remember for three local air cadets as they got a chance to fly and qualify for their pilot’s licences at no cost to them.
They received their pilot’s wings at a wings parade earlier this week.
Flight Sergeant Caleb Robert earned a Transport Canada glider pilot licence and finished as the top glider pilot on the course.
He said that in a glider: “It is not noisy and you rely a lot more on the forces of nature” when flying.
Later this month he will travel to Toronto to attend the air cadet general meeting where he will be recognized for his achievement.
Warrant Officer 2nd Class Sara Breault attained her powered private pilot license after completing her scholarship at the Brampton Flying Club.
She had the second-highest test score in her course.
Recently she transferred to Sault Ste. Marie from the 355 Polaris Squadron in Englehart.
“The freedom you feel and the thrill when you start up the engine” is what sticks in this 17-year-old’s mind after her accomplishment.
Her future goal is to attend Sault College for the aviation technology course.
Warrant Officer 1st Class Nathan Robert successfully completed the power scholarship course at the Durham Flight Centre in Oshawa Ontario and earned a Transport Canada private pilots license.
He said: “It was awesome, and the best thing I have ever done.”
He finished third overall in his course.
He was the recipient of a locally sponsored bursary of $1,000 to further his flying experience.
This 18-year-old is possibly looking at a career as an aircraft mechanic in the Canadian Air Force.
Mrs. Robert, the mother of Caleb and Nathan, presented both of them with their wings on the parade.
Mr. Jorge Ardila, a friend of Warrant Officer 2nd Class Sara Breault, presented her wings to her as her parents were unable to make the journey down from Englehart.
All three new pilots are members of the 155 Borden Grey Air Cadet Squadron and three of thirty Cadets who participated in training this summer.
The reviewing officer for the wings parade was Major Ronald Huszarik (retired).
A pilot himself, he is currently flying a regional jet for Air Canada Jazz.
He served in the Canadian Air Force from 1979 to 1998, flying CF-5s and CF-18s.
He also was posted for three years on an exchange with the German Air Force where he flew RF-4E Phantom II jets.
Major Huszarik inspected the 155 Squadron and observed the accomplishments of many cadets as they received summer camp badges, training level badges, perfect attendance awards, long service medals and promotions.
Warrant Officer 1st Class Nathan Robert was promoted from 2nd Class and also received his six-year perfect attendance award.
He is now the most senior ranking Cadet in the 155 Squadron.
The 155 Air Cadet Squadron meets on Wednesday nights at the Pine Street Armoury from 18:30 to 21:00 and has boys and girls from 12 to 18 years of age.
The squadron has a pipe and drum band, drill team and range team.
It is currently accepting new recruits.
